It has been 3 years since his last win at a grand slam event. Many people in the midst of these years started speculating if he had that energy, that athleticism left in him anymore. And many people still have their doubts. Could he win another grand slam? Can he overtake the likes of Rafa, Novak, Murray and the other young bloods once more? Or will the number 17 be his final destination? These are the questions that many have in their minds. But frankly, to me, it doesn’t matter. The thing that mattered or still matters to me even more is his passion for the game and the hard yards that he is still putting day in and day out to compete professionally. The hunger, the desire, the animation that he still has and which he has carried throughout his career is what i salute him for. Consider this very carefully, a man who has already captured the most number of grand slams and has conquered almost every possible record that is out there and for him to be going empty handed without winning a single grand slam title in 3 consecutive years and still being in the top 10 and playing as well as ever he has and that too with the growing age is mesmerizing. Although I’d love to see him putting his hands on more of those grand titles but to be honest even if he doesn’t, his enthusiasm for the game as a whole and not just grand slams and his thirst for winning every single match have won my heart and the hearts of millions.
What can reading do to you? Well, it can do lots of stuff, from teaching you things beyond your horizons to reducing your anxieties. Reading, it teaches you different cultures, different religions, and politics of different regions. Reading, it assists you in times of utter confusion, brings you joy and satisfaction and helps you in communication. Reading, it improves your concentration, enables your brain to stay active and makes you consider things from different perspectives. And above all, reading, it gives you knowledge that no one can take it away from you.
Reading is one of those healthy habits, which is very difficult to form and do on consistent basis. It is similar as going to gym for instance or jogging or taking dog for a walk. You can see the apparent benefits of these practices but you don’t do them or do them but occasionally. The followings are some of the steps that we can take towards developing the practice of reading.
- The first thing to do is to consider all the benefits and rewards of reading of which some are mentioned above. You see, once you take into account all the merits of reading, can you think of really going in to it. When you are not aware of its benefits or the benefits of anything for that matter, you don’t do that thing. You do things when you see advantages in them. What is my benefit of studying for exams? In what ways can exercise help me? Similarly how can reading benefit me? Once you answer this question, you are good to go.
- Second thing you want to do is to begin with small versions of reading, such as articles, short essays or stories, blogs, magazines, etc. This was a significant factor at least when i think of myself. What this did to me was that it persuaded me to go through whole portions of the work without sensing quitting. On the contrary if we start off with an extensive 300-page book, more often than not, we put it aside after having read only few pages. Sometimes we abandon it in the middle of the first page! Believe me, it happens. Also what those small articles and stories do is, they give you a sense of satisfaction of having read a whole story or a piece of information and gradually prepares you for long-lasting readings.
- After considering and acknowledging all the advantages of reading and having gone through number of articles and short stories for few days or weeks, you develop a sense of reading a lengthy book. If you still haven’t, don’t be concerned at all and keep on going with what you have been doing. The important thing is to stay persistent. Eventually a time comes and believe me it does come, when you want to pick up and lose yourself in “Harry Potter” or “Hamlet” or “In Search of Lost Time” or “War and Peace,” books, that once you dared not to touch.
Alright! So as you know the title name, NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, you may already be giggling within yourselves, right? I know, and it is true, remind yourself of one of your friends, with whom you were sharing stories one day and he started like “dude, you won’t believe me what happened that day, i nearly died.” And amid his narration of the story his face expression changing to a funny, still frightening one, and at that very moment, you realise you can’t control your chuckling anymore and you burst out laughing! So don’t need to control your laughs, you FOLKERS! I hope whatever i had to go through that day, one day you may also experience the same thing! huh!
So what happened was, i went to this adventurous park full of weird, lizard, crocodile, dragon, you name it, all these scary animal-shaped rides. Me and my friend were laughing our asses off seeing the expressions on the faces of those riders which were full of horror, their red faces changing to the most yellowish you could think of as they were about to experience the most freakish of all the rides. Then all of a sudden this bitch friend of mine, i dunno what on earth happened to him that he couldn’t enjoy the pleasant moment and shouted in excitement, “I am going in that ride right now and you are coming along!” And at that very moment my laughing at those poor riders which i thought would cause my intestines to come out of my body, had converted to the very WTF?!! expression you could ever imagine. I was like dude, are you f****ng serious? Instantly i refused to go along. In his reply, this buddy of mine didn’t do nothing, nothing he said or did but…..but gave me such an annoying stare that i knew that the consequences of going in in that ride were bad but the aftermath of my refusal would be worse. So half-heartedly i agreed and went along with him.
As we settled down into our seats and fastened our seat belts, i looked around and realised, the ride was full and that it could go off any moment. That was when i closed my eyes and talked or at least tried to talk to god for the very first time, it went off like this, “hey god, i hope you are doing well, but to be honest, i m in a spot of bother here as you can see, i know we haven’t communicated with each other for a long time, but help your poor creature out here won’t you?( Now obviously i was feeling a little guilty at that moment, of course i didn’t show that to god, you see, you have to be assertive as not to be denied of your request, specially to god. But the irony was that god knew all the stuff! He knew that i was the guilty one, that i was contacting him after a while and that too when i was in trouble. So i further pushed for my plea and started shouting “i am sorry, i am sorry, i am sorry, it won’t happen again!” My friend and the others in our row seat upon hearing my cry for help had the time of their lives, their laughing and chuckling and their irritating consolation added only anger to my already frightened situation. We were in the middle of this so called adventure, when suddenly the ride stopped and i realised that my position was up sided down, i could see the vague images of the people down there, shouting and laughing to their folks, all the while i was cursing the in-charge of the ride, “How could you be so heartless??” I started screaming and forcefully closed my eyes, when i realised i was nearing my death. And then i had a go at the god, “Ok god, i guess you are insisting that we meet each other soon, obviously you can’t wait a little longer, I’m just 21! Come on! I am not even married ;( Help me, would you?! FOR YOUR SAKE!” Then downward the ride went and stopped. “God finally listened to my cry for help,” i thought. Only upon then, everybody including this monster friend of mine shouted, “once more, once more!” My reaction to those demons was “Oh Yeh? Bitches! you can enjoy as long as you want, but i am off from here.” Still in trauma, i somehow managed to get off from there and swore in my heart if i ever went even close to that devil of a thing.
Stress, anxiety, trauma, sounds familiar? Indeed! On a broad base, there are two types of stresses. Minor stress, which are the everyday stresses, e.g being late to a meeting, small arguments with colleague or friends, having to work for longer hours, missing an appointment and etc, etc. The second one is the major stress. This has to do with longterm issues and can have devastating effects on us. For e.g. stress of a divorce, death of a close person, being fired from the job, major illness etc. So what to do when faced with such situations? The following are some of the ways that can help us reduce our anxieties.
- Confront them.
We have to deal with the minor stresses almost on daily basis and we can’t get away from major ones either, although they don’t occur as frequently as the minor ones. So indeed if we have to face these situations, why not confront them in a sensible manner? Why do we have to lose our heads over them? Why can’t we take these situations as they are? Why do we have to be so deeply tensed about them and let them ruin our lives? The rational way to behave when moments of stress knocks your door, is to let them enter, talk to them in details and in a reasonable way. Open up your mind to the whole conversation. Ask questions such as what happened? How did that happen? What are the possible reasons? What is my next step? Unless you do that, you won’t be able to understand the causes of your stress, second, you won’t be in a position to take the next logical step because you weren’t going right about it in the first place. Confrontation should be our priority when faced with moments of despair.
2. Take them as a challenge.
We are faced with all sorts of challenges in our lives. We face challenges of getting good grades, challenges of doing a good job in office, of being a responsible parent, of being healthy and etc. So if you are ready to take those situations as challenges, why shouldn’t you consider “stress” just another battle too? A battle that you wanna have a go at and give your best.
3. Be positive.
You know when we are distressed or anxious, it is not just because of the problems that we are facing but the amount of negativity that we have accumulated in us. “Oh, what is going to happen if i went to work now, is my boss going to fire me? Is he really going to humiliate me in front of all my co-workers? It is all my fault, how couldn’t i get up by the alarm clock? These are the sort of negative thoughts that you want to refrain from. Not only just because they are bad for your health but they are useless, really. How could you compile such a big pile of negative thoughts when you don’t really know what’s going to happen? What’s done is done, you can’t do nothing about it. Sensible approach is to stay positive and hope for the best.
Apart from the fact that it is considered one of the best movies of all time, it is unique in a way that it not only depicts life of mafias but it teaches you love and affection at the same time. The love of the head of a family for his family, love of a young man for a woman, sense of responsibility, about politics and how loyalty is vital specially to your close ones.
2.Life is beautiful (1997).
The most uplifting movie you could ever watch! The main protagonist is a guy who has immense love in his heart as he chases for the woman of his dreams. His deep affection for his child and how he tries to protect him from the brutalities of the Nazis shows his character of deep strength. If you are a sentimental person, this movie is just for you.
3.Schindler’s list (1993).
True story of a businessman who attempts to save the lives of hundreds of jewish refugees during the holocaust by hiring them in his factories. it conveys us a message for the need to respect and protect every innocent life.
Inspirational, up-lifting account of a Scottish warrior who guides his country to independence against England.
5.The passion of christ (2004).
A biblical drama film depicting the passion of Jesus, although it is criticised for its intense violence, it is a film which would make you realise a lot of things.
A bureaucrat who upon finding about his terminal illness seeks to find meaning in his life. If you are a person who wants to know how one feels when death is next door, this movie is a must watch.
7.To kill a mockingbird (1962).
Story of a lawyer who attempts to defend a black man who at the time had no civil rights. Along with the right to stand with the truth, this movie indicates us how one should up bring their children.
8.Eat, pray, love (2010).
An intriguing story of a woman who had everything a woman desires for. But still she finds herself in the middle of nowhere. Her journey to find answers to her uncertainties is inspiring.
9.A moment to remember (2004).
Heartbreaking, heart-rending, full of grief and a beautifully portrayed love story of two souls. If this film doesn’t make you cry, nothing will.
10.City lights (1931).
A silent romantic comedy film and one of the finest ones of Chaplin. This movie is combination of humour and love, can you ask for anything more fascinating?
There is no denying that social websites’ usage is at its peak. According to Pew Research Centre, 74% of internet users use social networking sites. 71% of online adults use Facebook, 23% Twitter, 26% Instagram, 28% LinkedIn. It is used for a variety of purposes such as social networking, uploading statuses, blogging, uploading photos and videos, promotion of businesses, establishing of online businesses, information seeking, entertainment, etc. We spend most of our time of the day on these websites. So it is very important to use them intelligently. How do you do that? Well, the following are some of the strategies that you could adopt on using social websites.
1. Don’t spend too much time on them.
It is important not to give too much of your time unless you really have to, for e.g for the promotion of your business or setting one, for networking which is benefiting you in an important way, or for an emergency purpose that you feel you can’t be away from it too long. Your time is precious, you don’t want to waste it scrolling through unimportant stuff and which are in no use to you. Ask yourselves, how could you have so no life that you are wasting it on trying to figure out what is going on in others’ and that too is upsetting you, because they seem far more happier and contented than you. So benefit from it, do what you have to do and skip the non essential stuff.
2.Set a fixed time.
Everyday when you wakeup in the morning, ask yourself when am i going to be free today where i am going to just relax and don’t do anything important. And then prescribe that time to using social websites. What this would do is that it would prevent you from wasting your time. It would stop the urge of taking out your phone in the middle of an important meeting, or studying or while interacting with your friend. Tell yourself each day that this is my time during which i am allowed to login to my social websites and i am not going to use them any other time. It could be in the morning from 8am to 9am or 2pm to 2.30pm or 9pm to 11pm, whatever time suits you. I know it is easier said than done but believe me, it is just going to be hard in the first few days or weeks maximum, but after you get through that period, it is going to be very normal. You would be surprised you are going through the whole day without going into your social sites other than your fixed time that you have set for it.
Now there are a lot of people who may be feeling just fine but as soon as they log in to their Facebook accounts, smiles on their faces disappear. Why? Because they are browsing through this album of their friend who is having so much fun and he/she is but all alone. First of all, if that is the case, then deactivate yourself from this virtual world. You won’t have to see anyone laughing and having amazing times, and it could help you immensely in lowering your depression. But if you can’t do that either, then wise up, if people have the right to enjoy their lives, so do you. Go out with friends and family members and have the best of your times. Take selfies and videos and upload them. What this would do is that it would allow you to come out of these feelings of being alone and everybody having fun. You would also notice that you are enjoying seeing other people having fun because you are.
Persistence is the word that comes to my mind when i talk about them. Along with great qualities of optimism, humility, imagination, capability, fearlessness, encouragement, the one that matters the most in the long run, is their perseverance, their life long commitment to their vision. If you ever listen to them or read them, they would tell you, the core ingredient of their success was to keep on pushing in what they believed.
Most of these people that we call them now as remarkable individuals, were once called crazy, out of their mind, irrational, illogical people who didn’t know what they were doing. But as it turns out, they took all the beatings and were as steadfast in their madness as ever. It was their perseverance that eventually enlisted them in the books of history and highly achieved people. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Dhirubhai Ambani, Andre Agassi, Louis Armstrong sure had a vision and passion in them. But to be honest with you, that vision can go away pretty quickly if you are mocked, and labeled with all sorts of ridicules and scorns. Keep on pushing no matter what, is all that matters and eventually that tenacity would help you realise your dream. Some people would argue that having a vision and being optimistic about it is more important, sure having a dream is important to achieve greatness and is in fact the initial step towards mastery but if you don’t have the perseverance with it, to avoid all the obstacles that comes along with it, how do you expect to achieve the unthinkable?!
Having a dream, a desire to do the inconceivable, is significant to achieving greatness but more so significant is our commitment to it.
Enviousness, covetousness, jealousy is the desiring of something belonging to someone else. It could be anything from wealth, status to happiness, love and beauty. The typical jealous mindset says that if someone has something, why doesn’t he have it? why doesn’t he have the Ferrari? why is he not the owner of that big house? why is he not as famous as that actor? or why is he not intelligent as the guy next door? As a result he despises them. He hates the very fact that someone is superior than him. Such people also think that if they can’t have something, others should not have them too. If they can’t afford to buy a farm or be a billionaire my friend or my neighbour shouldn’t be able too. They can’t stand someone owning something that he is unable to.
How to disown this hurtful trait?
1.Find a goal: You would be saying, how come finding a goal is linked to ridding of jealousy. Well, it is very much so. When you find out what you really want to achieve in life, automatically, your whole focus is shifted to achieving that thing and only that thing. You have no time for resentment and enviousness. You don’t bother thinking about your neighbour who recently bought a Rolls Royce. You have got your own target to work towards. So put aside all the discontentments for others and ask yourself, what is my aim? what do i want to achieve in life? what am i so passionate about? what is my obsession? Believe me once you answer these questions you are too occupied to be bothered by others.
2.Change your attitude:
“Your mind can be your best friend or your worst enemy.” It is so applicable here if you notice. This neighbour of yours has got a better job than you, he is well off, got a loving family. Now it is totally up to you, either to envy him and wish his job be taken and he leads a miserable life or on the other hand you take inspiration from him and learn from him, notice the good things about him and trying to apply them on yourself. You see, it’s all about attitude. Tell yourself, “if he can do it, so can i, after all he is just a human being as i am.” You just have to have that confidence in you and how sensibly you go about it.
But what about the inborn qualities that people have?
You would be wondering now, ok that is that, but what about the naturally talented people. People who are born intelligent, or beautiful or lucky. First of all does it matter to you? Has it caused you any harm or given you any benefits? No! so why even bother? But you would be saying, you hate them for that very fact that they got something for free and that’s eating you inside. Well, if that is the case, then ask yourself, are there some people who might be saying the same thing about you? And believe me, you would find lots of people who wished they were as privileged as you. It may be the family that you are born into, or the place you belong to, or maybe for some bizarre reason they do find you attractive! Just kidding, but trust me there are people out there. As far as intelligence or luck is concerned, well you tell me, being born genius or fortunate is exciting or working hard and earning it and one day realising, “WOW! I am super smart and fortunate and you know what? I wasn’t born with it but i worked my ass off for it and i am proud of myself!” After all this is what makes life so exciting, having to earn something and being proud of it! Isn’t it? God! Life would so boring if i was gifted with all the life’s fortunes and i didn’t have to reach out for them.
Being jealous of someone isn’t something to be ashamed of. In fact if used in a positive way, it could take us along way. Life isn’t fair, you know it and i know it and this is what makes it exhilarating.
Now there are many ways in which we can comprehend the phrase “Life is too short”. Mostly, people perceive it as “You know what! Screw everything! Life is too brief to be thinking too much. You just straight away do things that you want to do and the way you want to do.” According to them people are insane to be wasting their precious time finding out their so-called ” Passion,” specially in this ever fast-moving world. “They should just right away get on with any thing they like and stick with it, and what is so difficult in finding out a fascination anyways?” They argue that there are so many fields, so many areas of interest, specially now than ever, that you can take on and achieve success and that you have to just pick one and go for it. Their take on this brief duration of time is that it should be fully lived and not wasted looking for a true desire or aim, or trying to find the reason of existence even if such thing exists.
Now the above argument seems pretty reasonable. I mean, we are given just a single life, and that too with its ever rapid speed specially now than ever, our time on this planet has become ephemeral than ever. But doesn’t this very fact of life being brief, makes you want to do something that you desire for? Doesn’t it call you for giving thoughts and considerations prior to taking any major step in life? Doesn’t this bitter reality of getting old someday and having to depend on someone to look after you in some way or the other, makes you realise that you ought to do something you would die for?
I am going to give you a scenario just to clear my whole point here. Suppose you choose engineering for a career, you are like, “This is what I think I like, and I feel I’m pretty good at it.” You don’t look no further, are very optimistic about your success. So you go to college, get a degree, then you get a well paid job or start something on your own. You are pretty happy about it in the end, earning more than most of the people you know at least. Time is passing by and you are going on with your life just fine.
Old and feeble now, you are sitting in one of those rise recliners, and you are examining your inner self. It is one of those days when you want to look back at your whole life and see what you did and what you didn’t, what is left to do, and what could have been better or being thankful for an apparently good thing to have not happened. You are pretty satisfied so far with your soul interrogation until you are like, “Wait a minute, what about my career? I mean did I really have to go for engineering? Was it the only thing that I wanted to do? Or could I have just waited a little longer until I have found my real objective? Suddenly you are in a state of utter confusion and despair.
Did I really live my life? Did I discover the aim, the craze that I was looking for? And did I devote my time to that passion of mine to the utmost of my sincerity? Make sure at the end of this short life, when we are confronted with these crucial questions, we answer them with a genuine smile on our faces.
Story of broken heart “heart patients”
Heart patients on hearing the news of federal panel’s backing of approval of a new powerful drug to protect against heart attacks left them with series of heart attacks.
if we analyse the situation here, people with heart diseases are mostly 50 and above. According to the doctors one of the leading causes of heart attacks is the high level of presence of LDL which is a bad cholesterol and I sure as hell don’t know what does that even mean?? But ask the sufferers of this pathetic disease, their immediate reaction would be “Oh, doctors can say whatever they like but I know what’s the cause of my heart disease. It’s not the bad cholesterol, its the bad children of mine. They say the drug lowers the level of these cholesterols but I say if you could only lower the preoccupied level of my children, I’d be more than thankful.”
According to these patients, “doctors are very strange people which is very much understandable from the amount of books they read over the course of their lives but we as the victims of this disease would suggest to them, I m sorry did I say “suggest??” what I meant to say is that I on behalf of all my fellow victims “request” the cardiologists to find a formula to straighten out the behaviour of our children, the generation Y. You see, its not the increasing level of bad cholesterol that is the cause, but it is the increasing level of so called “productivity” of these kids that is killing us. Doctors of highly intellect profession, we expect a solution, be it not the most accurate one, but at least something which would make these highly occupied children of ours, for once in their lifetime, want to listen to us.”
“We don’t say that you are wrong, in fact we admire you for trying to come up with a solution to the disease, you maybe right about the bad cholesterol thing, but when we feel discomfort, heaviness or pain in the chest, when the anxiety attacks us, it is generally when we see the heads of our children, yes, not faces, as they are screened onto their smart phones, either occupied by Facebook or coming up with a reply to a friend on what the best pages on meme are?!!! It seems that the only way that we can communicate with them is by whatsapping them or by putting them in our Facebook friends list. But even for that, liking and putting up a nice comment on their posts is something that you don’t want to forget or in more accurate words, you dare not to forget!!”
In the end doctors, feeling their integrity has been attacked heard the outcry of the patients. They sat down with them, had a long debate on how to put some sense into this generation of “cool” kids. They understood that as time is changing and so is the lifestyle, specially now than ever with the inventions and technological advances. Reasonably, they shouldn’t be too harsh on them. Although they did suggest these kids should somehow be told and explained that they can’t be involved in their phones all the time. It is for their own sake that they should allocate certain amount of time for each activity. If they don’t organise themselves, there would be no difference between them and the robots in near future. Imagine that! They will have no feelings and certainly no experiences of this beautiful life. And by the time they get old they would realise, “OMG! Im old already, i want to go back again, I want to feel life and experience it.” You are kidding me right?
